Any chance of snow next week?

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hello bloggers,

Chances of snow could increase next week, but as usual Kansas City is in a place that is already showing big differences in patterns.

I’m heading to Manhattan, Kansas this morning to talk to farmers about the weather and the LRC. I will be heading back to work tonight on KSHB 41. The pattern is getting interesting all around Kansas City, but our weather is still calm. That’s a good thing with the big AFC Championship game at Arrowhead Stadium’s GEHA Field taking place on Sunday. We’ll take a look.

Yesterday was a very strange day. Dodge City, Kansas had about 8 inches of snow, and Interstate 70 was closed near Goodland, Kansas as 27 inches of snow fell in a few places. Yes, I said 27 inches of snow:

It was a strange little storm that is now re-developing over New Mexico and will track east into Oklahoma.

This next forecast map shows snow near and just west of Oklahoma City later today. Solid black lines are called isobars and Kansas City will have a southerly breeze with temperatures warming to near zero this afternoon.

Forecast Wednesday

Forecast Wednesday

This storm will track east and re-build into a major storm again just off the east coast. Ships could accumulate a foot of snow when the heaviest snow appears as it falls over the Atlantic Ocean.

Saturday Forecast

Saturday Forecast

This is a difficult forecast for large cities. Boston, and especially Cape Cod, is likely to have the heaviest snowfall. A little further east and New York won’t get much, and a little further west and 10 inches of snow could fall in Central Park. Meteorologists near the East Coast will therefore have a difficult forecast.

While this is happening in the east, in Kansas City, we only have calm weather. This will benefit Kansas City and Los Angeles for Sunday’s big games:

The weather is looking fantastic for football. We will update the forecast as we get closer.

Alright, so what about those chances of snow for next week? Take a look at the latest predictions from the US and European model:

European snow forecast model

Weather F5

The European model targeted the Kansas City metro area with 6 to 12 inches of snow, while the US model (GFS) targeted Des Moines, Iowa.

American model

Weather F5

The LRC backs a much stormier February ahead of us than we have been used to so far this winter. But, the LRC has also shown that these storm systems have not been as functional in our region. With 27 inches of snow blanketing parts of western Kansas yesterday, this possible “flip” in the weather pattern has our attention. Let’s see if this mid-week storm for next week continues to show up on the models.

Alright, I’ll hit the road and let you know how it goes in Manhattan, Kansas. Love the car ride and then the drop within the Manhattan city limits. I don’t like the fact that it’s 8 degrees outside. At least the wind is light. Gather today. It will warm to nearly 32 degrees this afternoon.

Thank you for spending a few minutes reading the weather blog and sharing this weather experience. Have a good Wednesday.
