A HOT weekend is expected in several parts of South Africa.

According Weather in Voxvery light showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected in KwaZulu-Natal, while mostly sunny and warm to HOT temperatures are expected in the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, the south african meteorological service (SAWS) has issued a weather warning for veld fires in the following areas.
A WARNING FOR THE VELD FIRES HAS BEEN ISSUED
The SAWS advised that fire crews, manpower and equipment be put on standby.

“At the first sign of smoke, all possible measures should be taken to bring the fire under control as soon as possible.”

WHAT TO DO WHEN VELD FIRES APPROACH YOUR PROPERTY
What to do when veld fire approaches your property:
- Decide if it is safer to stay or leave.
- Wear protective clothing and footwear.
- Prepare emergency food and medical supplies.
- Move livestock to safer areas.
- Listen to the radio for news updates.
- Wet the garden and the house, especially on the side of the approaching fire.
- Plug the gutters and fill them with water.
- Fill bathtubs, buckets and garbage cans with water in case of a water shortage and have mops handy.
- Seal any gaps between the doors and the floor using damp towels or similar items.
- Close all windows and doors.
- If you decide to stay, go inside and stay there until the fire is over.
- Bring fire hoses and other firefighting equipment inside with you.
- Check the inside of the house, including the roof cavity, and extinguish any small fires immediately.
- Stay vigilant after the passage of fire.
- If you decide to evacuate your home, remember that every second counts:
- Escape first, then call for help. Develop a fire escape plan and ensure that all family members meet at an agreed meeting place outside.
- Make sure everyone in the family knows two ways to escape from each room.
- Practice feeling your way with your eyes closed.
- Never stand in a fire, always crawl through the smoke and try to keep your mouth covered.
- Practice your family emergency plan / home escape plan frequently with your family.
- Never come back into a burning building for any reason, you could die.
- Finally, having a working smoke detector greatly increases your chances of surviving a home fire.
