WINSTON-SALEM, NC (WGHP) — Ice is the danger right now. Anything that melts during the day refreezes at night.
People in a neighborhood near West End Boulevard in Winston-Salem where hills have caused people to slide and slide.
“We hiked to the top with the kids and did a bit of sledding so that was awesome. It was awesome,” said Saami Yazeani who lives in the area.
“Put your ice skates on first, because it’s dangerous.” Patty Mead, who was driving, said.
What started as fun in the snow…
… Has turned into a kind of skating rink in this neighborhood.
“Right now it’s incredibly freezing. Poor Niiko here was slipping, and he couldn’t even get traction and he had long fingernails,” Yazeani explained.
And it’s not just dogs that have trouble getting around. FOX8 captured video as a white Lexus drove around a gray pickup truck and began to skid. Fortunately, the driver of the white Lexus took control of the vehicle.
“We got a front row seat to try and watch them go up that hill, which most cars weren’t able to do,” said neighbor Andrew Boudin.
It was hills like this around the neighborhood that prompted the city to put up signs warning of the conditions and road closures throughout the neighborhood to warn people of the conditions.
Yazeani and her family are playing it safe.
“We haven’t ventured out yet. Hopefully around 1 or 2 p.m., once it’s around 40 (degrees), we’ll try,” Yazeani said.
But for people like Mead, who were in the neighborhood for work, moving to this neighborhood was necessary.
“We deliver regional produce to people in Forsyth County, helping farmers in our state,” Mead explained.
She had to find alternative routes to have it delivered on Tuesday.
“I was about to come down the hill behind me in full view of the driver, but a truck, a big truck came up the hill and said, ‘Madam, don’t go that way. I went into this direction and I almost hit two cars. So I’m at the top of the hill figuring out what I can do next, except I don’t think I can turn around because it’s all ice,” Mead explained. .
City Link officials said its current goal is to salt and brine roads like this until the temperature allows the ice to break up, otherwise it makes things even more slippery.
The reason many people are still snowbound in their neighborhoods is because of how this weather event happened.
We had rain and it froze, then add a layer of snow and sleet to that and you basically have a big chunk of ice.
City Links’ Randy Britton told FOX8 they tried to plow roads that connect neighborhoods to major roads on Monday night, only to find a layer of ice below. So they stopped on what made things worse with the freezing temperatures.
They ask that you please help them by staying home so you don’t have to go out to allow their teams to treat the street.
