  • The October full moon graced the skies from Sunday evening through Monday.
  • This moon was called the hunter’s moon, which was named by Native Americans because the brightness of the moon was a good time for hunting.
  • Photos from around the world show the magnificent appearance of the moon in the night sky.

October’s full moon graced the skies from Sunday evening through Monday, giving astronomers the chance to photograph the spectacle. The images show the moon from different locations around the world.

The moon reached its maximum illumination just before 5 p.m. Sunday, when it was below the horizon. To many it may have appeared larger and more orange as it was seen near the horizon. According to Space.com, it’s called the “moon illusion. “The coloring is because light reflected back to Earth passes through more of the atmosphere lower in the sky than when the moon is overhead. Most blue photons bounce back before hitting the human eye. , but red photons with longer wavelengths pass through to viewers.

The large appearance of the moon is due to its fullness on the horizon. Comparatively, next to objects on the horizon such as buildings and trees, the moon looks quite large. But when the moon rises in the sky, it is eclipsed by the horizon and the vast surrounding sky.

Sunday’s moon was the hunter’s moon, which was named by Native Americans because the moon’s brightness was a good time to hunt in preparation for the cold months. The Hunter’s Moon is the first full moon after the harvest moon, which is the first full moon after the autumnal equinox. In some years, the October full moon is closer to the equinox, in which case that moon is called Harvest Moon, the September full moon is called Corn Moon, and the November full moon becomes Hunter’s Moon. They are the only two moons linked to astronomical events and as such are the only two moon names that do not always occur in specific months.
