Green Pulse Podcast: How Humans Exploit Wild Plants and Animals – IPBES Report

The report by the UN Scientific Advisory Group on Biodiversity, known as IPBES, which was released in early July, found that 70% of the world’s poor depend directly on wildlife. And one in five people depend on wild plants, algae and fungi for their food and income. Yet overexploitation, including the illegal trade in animals and plants, endangers nature and threatens the lives of billions of people.

In this episode, Straits Times environmental correspondent Audrey Tan and climate change editor David Fogarty discuss the importance of wildlife with report co-chair Dr Marla Emery, a research geographer at the Norwegian Institute of nature research.

Highlights (click/tap above):

1:53 Why are wild plants and animals important to humans?

4:54 What threats do wildlife species face?

9:29 How do different threats to nature interact with each other?

10:42 How can cash be used sustainably?

16:17 What steps can humanity take to ensure sustainable use of species?
