VDOT Hampton Roads said its trucks continued to work as snow blanketed the area. People are still being encouraged to avoid traveling so crews can clear the roads.

According to the Hampton Roads division of VDOT, crews see different conditions on the freeways, ranging from wet roads, slush and snow.

The eastern limits of Interstate 64 in Chesapeake near the Bowers Hill and Greenbrier areas and Interstate 264 in Virginia Beach are among the areas seeing the most snowfall and accumulation, VDOT said.

Crews are also working to treat and clear roads in the Franklin, Williamsburg and Accomac areas due to increased snowfall.

VDOT’s Hampton Roads division said more than 300 trucks equipped with plows and spreaders are actively engaged in combating winter conditions in the area.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said soldiers were seeing an increase in accidents and snow covering the roads.

VDOT crews have begun plowing and clearing some roads where the snow accumulation exceeds about two inches. The VDOT said it would continue to monitor and treat roads with salt to break up ice and apply sand to critical spots to improve vehicle traction.

As there is a possibility of high winds, crews will also be on standby to help with downed trees, branches and debris.

Transport officials are strongly advising people to stay home and off the roads. Snow and freezing temperatures overnight and Saturday morning could lead to refreezing of roads and freezing conditions.

For those who need to travel, Anaya suggested taking extra time to get to your destination, slowing your speed, and making sure your lights are working.
