New Weather Alert: Storm Will Cause Messy Morning Commute; Here is the latest

A new storm system that is expected to bring accumulated snowfall and cause slippery moving conditions will be followed by the potential for a major northeasterly during an active weather pattern in the region.

The fast-moving system is expected to bring widespread snowfall Wednesday night into dawn on Thursday morning January 20. (See the first image above.)

Generally, an inch or two of accumulation is expected at sunrise.

“A light accumulation of snow could result in snowy and icy roads for the Thursday morning drive,” the National Weather Service said in a statement released Wednesday. “Watch later forecasts for updates on this event.”

A winter weather advisory is now in effect.

Light snow will mix with rain at times throughout the morning, and an additional 1 to 3 inches of new snowfall is possible by noon Thursday across much of the region.

Thursday will be mostly cloudy with a high of around 32 degrees, with the temperature falling into the upper 20 degrees in the afternoon.

Friday January 21st will be mostly sunny and cold with a high in the 20s ahead of the potential for a larger system from Friday to Saturday January 22nd. (Click on the second image above.)

“There will be a further injection of arctic air into the northeast later this week, and as we have seen with this latest storm, this may set the stage for a significant storm to unfold,” said Bernie Rayno, AccuWeather’s chief meteorologist.

There are two scenarios left for the storm depending on the dip of the jet stream, Rayno said. If the jet stream dips further inland, the chances of heavy snowfall increase.

“In this case, the storm would trend northward along the coast with potential for snowfall or a combination of winter mixing along the Interstate-95 corridor of the Mid-Atlantic and New England” , said Rayno.
