People choose to ignore climate change; It’s a political decision: Amitav Ghosh

When it comes to climate change, author and social anthropologist Amitav Ghosh feels personally responsible to write about it, talk about it, and let people know about it. His recent books focus on the issue of climate change, its impact, and also explore the reasons behind it.

He feels personally responsible for writing about climate change as he has lived in the Sundarbans for a long time and has seen its impact over the years.

Ghosh was speaking at the Khushwant Singh Litfest in Kasauli on Saturday and the session was dubbed ‘The Tiger of the Sundarbans’. It was led by author and presenter Paul Waters.

While Waters asked Ghosh if the message on the urgency of climate change was not being communicated properly, Ghosh said there could not be just one message on climate change and things absolutely had to to change.

“As a species, we face the most serious crisis. It’s an existential crisis. Everyone knows about climate change, but many choose to ignore it. It is now a political decision. Didn’t Donald Trump know that? Of course, everyone knows that,” he said.

He added that the elites are waiting for a million people to die before they act. “They think they won’t be affected, they think only the poor will be affected. They assume others will pay the price, but they are dead wrong,” Ghosh said.

“The situation is really, really bad and the more you know, the more you know how bad it is. It’s hard to see how we can come back from here,” Ghosh said, adding that we need to reduce our footprint. carbon.

He also hailed China’s one-child policy and said if Asia had experienced industrialization sooner, we could have changed our ways much sooner when we weren’t so dependent on fossil fuels. “Now it has become almost impossible to change,” Ghosh said.

Stressing the climate emergency, Ghosh said we are now accelerating towards the precipice and it is no secret.

“For those who are serious about reducing their carbon footprint, be very wary of companies that advertise to reduce their carbon footprint,” Ghosh warned.
