South Florida residents are bracing for the coldest air in 10 years.
The West Palm Beach Police Department has shared some important safety tips for people to keep in mind as they warm up their homes for what may be the first time this season.
Heaters are one of the leading causes of fire-related deaths in the United States each year, according to first responders.

One of the most popular items being bought on the shelves right now is firewood, which people buy at hardware stores like Ace Hardware in Palm Beach Gardens.
“When the cold weather hits, people are pretty well prepared,” said Anthony Cuoco, sales associate at Ace Hardware in Palm Beach Gardens. “They start calling as soon as they see him on the news. If it’s going to be cold, they call us. ‘Do you have any firewood?’ We probably get 10 or 20 calls a day.”
Everyone said they just wanted to make sure they were ready for every scenario.
“When I went to Utah, I had snow gear on, so maybe (I’ll wear it),” Kaysi Cabrera of West Palm Beach said.
The other big seller at the hardware store was drop cloths that people can use to protect their plants from the cold.

Horticulture experts also shared tips people can use to protect their plants from freezing temperatures.
University of Florida Extension/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences St. Lucie County Urban Horticulture Officer Kate Rotindo said he’s glad there’s been some cold weather lately, as it gives many plants a chance to s acclimatize to the cold weather before the cold snap this weekend.
“I know we have a lot of people who have taken up gardening and maybe worked hard on their landscapes and we want to protect those plants if we can during these cold temperatures,” Rotindo said.

Pets should not be left outside in the cold. Horses and cattle should be provided with insulated shelters and extra blankets to keep them warm.
